India has introduced young fast bowler Prince Yadav by resting his ODI debut in the second of three one-day international matches against Afghanistan at Lucknow. India had been required by move to intensive responsibility that accumulated players be included on a squad depth as they looked ahead at future international assignments. Prince was rewarded with a long-awaited international chance after first capturing the attention of selectors through his domestic cricket and franchise tournaments performances.
It was Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi who won the toss and started batting first. The decision was based on the nature of the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, where early help for bowlers had been anticipated. Afghanistan was expected to utilize whatever movement there might have been and apply pressure on the Indian batting order straight away.
With India leading the 3-match series by one at this stage, they approached the defence of their title with real new confidence. With hosts needing just one more win to claim the series, it will also be an important match for both teams. As India sought to assert their dominance once more; Afghanistan were writing a comeback with the mindset of keeping the series alive ahead of heading into one final game.
The inclusion of Prince Yadav in the playing XI was one of the biggest talking points prior to play. The right-arm pace bowler has toiled on the domestic circuit over the years, riding through one end stage and all in midst of bagging consistent performances. Coaches and selectors have lauded him for his ability to generate pace as well as extract bounce from pitches. The biggest highlight of his career so far had been when he was finally handed the India cap that told how much the team management has believed in him.
Cottrell’s route to international cricket has not been a flowing one. He was like any young cricketer, honing his craft in domestic cricket for years when he seemed ready before getting a chance on the international stage. His form of late meant he had risen to the top in a list of talented fast bowlers vying for spots within the national side. His perseverance finally paid off, with the selectors offering him an opportunity on a global stage.
With the workload management and injuries coming into play, there were some changes to India’s team combination. With nothing on the line, management took that opportunity to try new players while ideally still putting a competitive 11 out there capable of winning the series. The mix was of plenty bad blood from ageing stars alongside budding young talent, a balance that felt strong enough to provide steady leadership coupled with exuberance.
Afghanistan, for the umpteenth time in this tournament, came primed to test their opponents. Over the years, the visitors have transformed into a competitive international unit and are filled with multiple match-winners, both in batting and bowling departments. It was their world-class spin attack that had tested even great batting line-ups for long, and the batters have shown they can fight back with fearless cricket.
And given the pitch in Lucknow, which was expected to give both bat and ball an interesting contest, Bowlers would have some help early and batters prepared to blot deep were almost certain to be rewarded. These kinds of conditions tend to lend themselves towards a critical first few overs, which is why Afghanistan opted to bowl after winning the toss.
The moment was special for Prince Yadav, and not just because of his century. It was a dream come true for so many young kids back across the country. Every aspiring cricketer dreams of walking onto the field and representing India in their colors, and that moment finally came for Prince after toiling away with determination.
With the series underway, Everybody was watching how the debutant would manage playing at international level. With the new ball or in key moments of the innings, Prince had a chance to make an impact straight away and help get his international career off on the right foot. It provided Indian fans with yet another young talent worthy of following over the coming years and injected a new narrative into an already prestigious game.
