Bangladesh Opt to Bat as Litton Das Misses 1st T20I Against Australia

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to bat first in Chattogram in game one of their T20I series against Australia. Attention was drawn, above and beyond the inter-team rivalry (India vs South Africa), because of numerous big squad changes well ahead of this match.

Bangladesh’s biggest blow came just before the start of the match when their captain Litton Das was declared out due to illness. However, in his absence the hosts were forced to make a last-minute change to their playing XI. With captain Shakib Al Hasan serving a two-match ban, vice-captain Mahedi has been tasked with leading the side in what is expected to be an incredibly challenging battle against one of the top teams in world cricket.

Bangladesh included Saif Hassan in the side to cover for Litton’s absence. Even with their captain absent, the management backtracked and left confidence on its stock in the squad to deliver an emphatic challenge. Bangladesh had also selected an effective bowling attack with a combination of pacers and spinners. The selectors again put faith in their seamers for this crucial series opener, with the growing fast-bowling resources of a country that has been such because of contemporary months.

Australia, on the other hand came with a fresh-faced squad and provided T20I debut to as many as two new-comers. Nikhil Chaudhary, all-rounder secured his maiden international cap after excellent performance on Domestic Circuit and Playing in Big Bash League as well. He has had a remarkable journey from India to Australia, rose through the ranks before he was picked for the national team.

A significant aspect of Nikhil’s debut was that he became one of the few players born in India to play international cricket for Australia. The selectors took notice of his performances for Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes, but it was this series against Bangladesh that finally gave him an opportunity to strut his stuff on cricket’s biggest stage.

The visitors had also handed an opportunity to promising left-arm fast Davies, who now has two Tests under his belt. Davies had found his feet domestically, and is known for pace and movement. Australia went for players that they want to take forward and get them exposure to the game as well so it was in line with going building stuff.

Bangladesh, after being asked to bat first in a target-based chasing format, had begun positively despite the absence of Litton Das. The two opening batters settled down well early on to build a solid platform. Australia’s pace attack came at them hard and they eased into the chase, cautious for a while before playing with intent so early wickets did not break the team psyche.

The conditions in Chattogram seemed perfect for batting during the early overs and so it proved with Bangladesh’s top order capitalising. Pursuing a slow and steady effort without flirting too much with danger, the hosts aimed to set themselves up for the sort of platform that could be turned later into something respectable.

The match was a chance for Australia to experiment with new combinations and see how its youngsters coped when facing pressure at international level. The focus was largely on youngsters Nikhil Chaudhary and Joel Davies, who were being deployed for the first time in the series against a confident Bangladesh side which appeared to be heading into home territory.

This series is a sequel for each group as both of them hope to orient themselves before the around-the-world pipeline remains steady. While the need for more reliable players who could win anywhere is what Australia are after, Bangladesh have their sights set on sharpening its T20 cricket establishment.

Both sides had clear goals ahead of the first T20I With the series being played in their own conditions Bangladesh wanted to wipe out that last statement, with Tom Hockley as his first captain and Australia thus looking for a flying start despite several new faces coming into play. The opening match between these two nations served as a tantalizing appetizer for what promises to be an exceptionally competitive and thrilling series shared by experienced players preparing the stage along with new blood emerging into it.
