The Dubai International Cricket Stadium, also known as the Dubai Sports City Cricket Stadium, is a versatile stadium mostly used for cricket. It is situated in the very large Dubai Sports City and the site is one of three principal cricket stadiums in United Arab Emirates, with the other two being Sharjah Cricket Stadium and Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi. It is made to accommodate a crowd of 25,000, which can be increased, and it offers a premier experience for fans and players alike. Instead of using light towers, the stadium has been designed with a unique system of 350 lights, fixed around the circumference of the roof to create a visual treat and a wonderful lighting system.
Dubai International Cricket Stadium History
The stadium was built in 2009 and quickly became a neutral venue for international cricket – especially for countries such as Pakistan, where they used this venue as their home venue for many years due to the security situation in their own country. The first-ever ODI happened on April 22, 2009 when Australia played Pakistan and Pakistan emerged victorious. The first Test at the venue occurred the next year in November, 2010 between Pakistan and South Africa. The early history of the ground established it on the international cricket calendar.

The Start of a Legacy
The Dubai International Cricket Stadium hosted its very first One Day International (ODI) match on April 22, 2009. Pakistan beat Australia in that game, and Pakistani player Shahid Afridi made history by taking an incredible 6 wickets for just 38 runs his best performance at the time. Another notable record was set by Azhar Ali, who scored an amazing 302 not out in a 2016 match against the West Indies.
Key Matches and Series
The stadium’s first-ever Test match was a draw between Pakistan and South Africa in 2010. That same year, South Africa won a five-match ODI series against Pakistan, sealing the victory with a 57-run win.
The stadium has hosted many important series over the years, including matches between Pakistan and New Zealand and a Twenty20 International against England. In 2012, Pakistan defeated England in a Test match by 10 wickets, with Saeed Ajmal winning the Man of the Match award for his 10-wicket haul.
Hosting Major Tournaments
The Dubai International Cricket Stadium has become a key venue for major cricket tournaments. In 2014, it was one of the stadiums used for the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the stadium, along with other venues in the UAE, hosted parts of the IPL tournaments in both 2020 and 2021. It was the site of the 2020 IPL final, where the Mumbai Indians beat the Delhi Capitals, and the 2021 final, where the Chennai Super Kings defeated the Kolkata Knight Riders.
The stadium has also improved its playing conditions over time, especially for T20 cricket, resulting in higher average scores during tournaments like the IPL 2020.
